A few weeks after Amelia was born I remember saying to Lilah, “I carried you inside my womb first, you know.”

“I know,” she said, “I remember.”

“You remember?”

“I remember your womb,” she paused. “It’s soft like Millie’s cheeks, and warm like Daddy’s hands. That’s why I stayed in there so long.”
