Meet Natalie. She is the owner of Heritage Kids in Petrolia. It’s a second hand kids clothing store located at 4180 Petrolia Line (the main street in Petrolia). Pretty much all of Lilah’s clothes are from Natalie’s store. Before we had her, we decided that there is not really any reason to buy new. We have bought Lilah a few new things (who can resist a Black Friday Matilda Jane clothing sale?), but she has been given so much by friends and family that we have been lucky not to have to spend any money. When her pants get too small, I just bring them in to Heritage Kids and trade up with whatever great items Natalie has in the next size up.
It makes sense to buy secondhand for babies because they grow sooooo fast and don’t really put any wear and tear on the clothes they do wear. I asked Natalie a few questions about her business.
Be sure to read this post all the way through for a sweet giveaway at the bottom of the post!
How long has Heritage Kids been in business?
N: Heritage Kids has been open since September, 2008. We started much smaller, but since then I have taken over the building and the Sears Catalog Store so I was able to move things around. We sell everything from bassinets, cribs and highchairs, to toys books, and clothing (sizes newborn to 12). We also sell some maternity wear.
What made you want to open a secondhand children’s shop?
N: Many reasons. Firstly, I’m a mom and I understand how (especially now) expensive it is to clothe children. Why not open up a way for our items to be recycled somehow? I have always wanted to open a store in Petrolia. It has given me a chance to be close to home and there are many young families here who were traveling to Sarnia to sell their items and were not happy with the return they were getting on their items. Also, I’m a woman who loves to shop! Shopping at secondhand stores has always made my money go much further which was something I wanted to pass along. When I price an item, I always ask myself, “What would I pay for it?”
Tell me a little about Heritage Kids.
N: At this point, we are venturing in a few different directions. We now take consignments. I decided that if we would do this, we would have the best consignment rates around – and we do! We also offer 75% store credit for your gently used items (i.e. if we buy $100 of items from a customer, they have the option to take a 75% store credit or cash). We will also trade. Really, whatever works for the customer. I would really like to start offering ‘Mommy-made’ products. There are so many talented mothers with some brilliant ideas for many unique items (i.e. diaper cakes, unique handmade toys, handmade lotions, etc.). Currently, I’m looking for mothers who would like to sell their handmade items on consignment in the store.
Tell me a little about yourself.
N: Hahaha… well Im 37,married to Steve Krumholtz and we have 2 gorgeous yet wild girls named Grace (7), and Simonne (5). I’ve lived here in Petrolia for the last 15 years or so and also lived in Sarnia for a while but I was born in England and moved here in 1980. Yes. that does make me old. I’m a very easy going person and I try my best to make sure each of my customers is VERY happy with what they find at Heritage Kids.
Natalie is generously offering a $25 Store Credit for those who would like to comment on what they would like to see at Heritage Kids ($25 will go a long way at Heritage Kids!). Natalie is open to any new ideas! Leave a comment below with your first and last name (e-mail addresses will never be published). The winner’s name will randomly be selected one week from today at 5pm and announced on the blog. I’ll throw in a $75 credit to Sarah Graham Photography for the winner as well! Start posting your comments!
